“Sergio is a fantastic teacher and has helped me from the very beginning of my gurdy journey. He provides pieces that allow me to build different techniques and styles and welcomes pieces I bring to him. His lessons are always adapted to where I’m aiming to go with the instrument and he is also very knowledgeable about historical notation and is amazing at breaking down challenging pieces to make them easier to understand.”
Grant Dotter

“For better or worse, without Sergio I wouldn’t have a playable instrument, and I probably would never have started down this path. His knowledge of music theory as well as history is from my point of view excellent, and his patience is legendary. I also like his style and approach. I would probably find anyone else too intimidating, but Sergio figured out quickly how to reach me.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found such a skillful, kind, patient and inspiring teacher, and I can’t wait to see how my journey with the hurdy-gurdy progresses!
Is the hurdy gurdy hard to learn?
Learning to play the hurdy gurdy can be a challenging and rewarding experience. Firstly, before you start, it’s important to do your research and find a playable instrument. Then, you can begin learning the basic techniques, using my video lessons or any of the available hurdy gurdy methods. During this stage, if you don’t have a teacher it’s common to encounter difficulties such as keeping a consistent rhythm or maintaining the correct pitch, but don’t give up!
Afterward, as you progress, you can begin to learn more complex melodies and embellishments, which require a greater degree of skill and practice. Meanwhile, it’s important to also develop your ear and listening skills, so that you can identify and correct any mistakes or issues with your playing.
Occasionally, you may feel frustrated or discouraged with your progress, but it’s important to remember that learning any new skill takes time and dedication. Whenever you encounter a challenging piece or technique, break it down into smaller parts and practice each element separately before putting it all together.
Following consistent practice and dedication, you will begin to see improvements in your playing and a greater understanding of the instrument. Ultimately, with enough time and effort, you can become a proficient hurdy gurdy player and enjoy the unique sounds and music that this instrument can create.
